The issue of establishing the National Bank of Georgia was raised for the first time after the declaration of independence on May 28, 1918.

Georgian Boni was put into circulation
On July 11, 1919, by a Decree of the Constituent Assembly, the first national currency of the independent Republic of Georgia - the Boni was put into circulation. Georgian Boni was a means of temporary payment.

The Law on Establishment of State Bank was adopted
On December 31, 1919, the Constituent Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Georgia passed the Law on the Establishment of the State Bank, for which 50 million was allocated from the budget. With the adoption of this law, Georgia first had its banking and monetary regulatory body.

Chairman of the Board and the first Governor of the State Bank were elected
On March 16, 1920, Iason Lortkipanidze was elected Chairman of the Board of the State Bank. On July 24, 1920, he took over the management of the State Bank.

The State Bank of Georgia opened its doors
On December 31, 1919, the Constituent Assembly of Georgia adopted the Law on the Establishment of the State Bank. The State Bank of Georgia was opened on July 24, 1920, 7 months after the adoption of the law by the government.

Batumi branch of the State Bank opened its doors
The Batumi branch of the State Bank of Georgia was opened in October 1920. "On the opening day, 50 million rubles were deposited to the current account of the bank. A cash and currency committee was established with the bank. The Batumi branch extends its work to western Imereti, Abkhazia, Samegrelo and Batumi districts."
The National Bank of conteporary Georgia was established
The National Bank of contemporary Georgia was established in 1991, after the collapse of the Soviet Union. By the decision of the Supreme Council of Georgia, all the entities of the Soviet credit system in Georgia were declared the property of the Republic of Georgia, including the State Bank. The latter served as the basis for the National Bank of the Republic of Georgia. However, the first central bank operated in Georgia from 1919 to 1921. See details.
