World Savings Day: NBG Holds Financial Education Classes
Georgia starts an information campaign for the World Savings Day from October 31, partnered with FinEdu, www.finedu.gov.ge, the NBG educational platform and the banking sector.
The events scheduled for a week include special open classes for school students, combined with the awareness-raising information campaign. Employees of partner organizations will be visiting schools and talking with students about the importance of saving.
Over 50 staff of NBG, including the Governor and Vice Governors, will visit schools to share valuable information with the young generation.
Governor Gvenetadze kicked off the series of classes at the 59th Public School of Tbilisi. By the end of the week, the NBG Staff will visit about 70 schools in Tbilisi and Rustavi. Bank of Georgia, TBC Bank, Terabank and MBC microfinance institution will be joining the initiative, visiting over 50 schools in the regions.
"We started the tradition of holding open savings classes in schools a few years ago with the help of the NBG staff willing to volunteer, whom we like to call ambassadors. The commercial sector also joined the initiative. This year's feedback clearly showed us that the interest of schools has increased significantly compared to previous years, which we eagerly welcome. The cooperation with teachers and their involvement is very important, as the NBG prioritizes improved financial education of our citizens. The increased interest and willingness of schools to cooperate with us is a clear indication that they fully understand the importance of financial education for students. To that end, mutual efforts for raising financial education is a prerequisite for better results," said Koba Gvenetadze, Governor of the National Bank of Georgia.
About the World Savings Day:
The decision to establish the World Savings Day was made at the first international congress of savings banks in Milan In 1924. Representatives of 29 countries participated in the congress. Originally, this day was called World Thrift Day and its purpose was to promote the idea of keeping money in the bank instead of keeping it at home. In 1989, the United Nations declared October 31 as World Savings Day. Enjoying the involvement of German savings banks and financial institutions, this day has been marked in many countries with various events for almost a hundred years now, acting to encourage saving and raise awareness of its benefits.
The tradition of celebrating the World Savings Day in Georgia started in 2012, and the financial sector marks it with various initiatives. The Georgian symbol of the Savings Day is Grovia the Ant. Events are organized for children and young people.
