Seminar on Corporate Governance and Basel Committee Principles Was Held at the National Bank of Georgia

On October 28 the seminar on “Basel II and Corporate Governance“ was held at the National Bank of Georgia. The seminar was organized by the “Savings Banks Foundation for International Cooperation“ and conducted by Professor Dr. Axel von Werder.   The representatives of the National Bank of Georgia, Finance-Budget Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, Ministry of Finance and commercial banks attended the seminar.   The German expert reviewed Basel II new principles elaborated by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, international systems of corporate governance and gave their comparative analysis based on different countries. Besides that, Dr. Werder discussed the issues of credit and operational risk assessment and transparency requirements according to Basel II.   During the seminar the issues of strengthening commercial banks equity capital, creation of the unified compatible conditions in the process of extending credits and implementation of new financial instruments have been also discussed.   Supervision services of central banks of thirteen countries (Belgium, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Canada, USA and Japan) are the members of Basel Committee. The Chairman of this Committee is the President of de Nederlandsche Bank, Mr. Nout Wellink.
