Nino Jeladze: The National Bank of Georgia Aims to Align Innovation with Financial Stability

02 November, 2026

Nino Jeladze, Vice Governor of the National Bank of Georgia (NBG), participated in the official opening of the International Conference on Digital Finance, DGFI 2026, in Tbilisi.

The International Conference on Digital Finance brings together representatives from the financial sector, businesses, international financial institutions, and technology companies. The event serves as a platform for discussions and the exchange of experience on the development of digital finance, the adoption of financial sector innovations, and enhanced international cooperation.

In her welcoming remarks, Nino Jeladze spoke about the development of Georgia's economy and financial sector, the country's investment attractiveness, and its potential to become a regional financial hub. Georgia's geographic location and its historical role in connecting Europe and Asia offer the country an opportunity to become an important center for regional financial integration and cross-border cooperation.

"The Georgian banking sector is well-capitalized and liquid, creating a strong foundation for supporting the country's economic growth. Furthermore, Georgian banks are expanding their operations beyond the country's borders and strengthening their regional positions. In 2025, approximately 33% of foreign direct investment in Georgia was directed to the financial sector, demonstrating international investors' confidence in the sector and the country's development potential," noted Nino Jeladze.

At the conference, the NBG Vice Governor highlighted the steps taken by the NBG to promote financial innovation. These include the introduction of a licensing framework for digital banks, under which three digital banks are already operating in Georgia, as well as the establishment of a comprehensive registration and supervisory framework for Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs), under which more than 40 providers, including international operators, have been registered. Nino Jeladze also emphasized the dedicated regulatory framework for the initial offering of stablecoins, which establishes requirements for market access, reserve backing, transparency, and consumer protection. According to her, the NBG's goal is to combine the promotion of innovation with clear regulations and effective supervision, thereby fostering trust in digital finance and ensuring the stability of the financial system.

"The future of finance means more than just introducing new technologies. It means creating a financial system that is more accessible, efficient, sustainable, and reliable. At the National Bank of Georgia, we understand that innovation and financial stability must be aligned. It is our responsibility to foster an environment where new ideas can emerge, businesses can grow, and consumers can benefit from better financial services, while safeguarding the integrity, security, and stability of the financial system," stated Nino Jeladze.
