29 December, 2005
President of the National Bank of Georgia Roman Gotsiridze met with the Heads of Tbilisi libraries on the New Year’s eve and presented them with the encyclopedic album “Money in Georgia” (two volumes). The above-mentioned work has been prepared by the NBG support and aims at popularization of cash circulation in Georgia. This bilingual book (in Georgian and in English) will be passed to all existing libraries of the region for future.
“Historically Georgia has been a transit country, the proof of which is the history of money circulation in Georgia. All that is depicted in the encyclopedic work “Money in Georgia”. The history of money circulation in Georgia also tells us about the broad economic relationships often overstepping the borders of the region. It is important to know, that the first coin was minted in the 4th century BC in Georgia. From this point of view libraries are entrusted with a historical mission – to convey these traditions to future generations.” – marked the President of the National Bank of Georgia Roman Gotsiridze.
The Board of Bankers of the National Bank of Georgia considers education as one of its priority guidelines. For these purposes in Georgia as well as abroad the encyclopedic edition “Money in Georgia” will be used for popularization of Georgian national currency and history of cash circulation. Above-mentioned book will be donated to libraries, higher educational establishments, schools and diplomatic missions of foreign countries.
Edition depicts the twenty-five-centuries-old history of cash circulation in Georgia.
The above-mentioned book depicts not only the national heritage of Georgian monetary units, but also provides the interested individuals with complete information about the world achievements in the spheres of numismatics and bonistics. All known types of coins ever circulating in the territory of Georgia are given in the book.
Money is one of the most important attributes of a State and it reflects not only the level of economy, but also the country’s political position and foreign policy orientation. Thus, from a certain point of view the history of money is the history of a nation too.
