
National Bank of Georgia and Caucasus International University Launch Documentary Series on the History of Georgian Money
The Governor of the National Bank of Georgia, Natia Turnava, attended the presentation of the short scientific-popular documentary film series “The Adventure of Georgian Money – 30 Stories” at Caucasus International University.
The media project was developed through the collaboration between the National Bank of Georgia and Caucasus International University and is dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the introduction of the national currency, the lari, as well as the 26-century history of Georgian money. The documentary series presents a comprehensive overview of the development of Georgia’s monetary and financial system. It reflects the key stages in the evolution of Georgian currency issuance and circulation, numismatic heritage, the establishment of financial institutions, and the country’s economic development.
The project aims to systematize Georgia’s financial history and present it to a broad audience in a visual, scientific-popular format.
In her remarks delivered at the event, Natia Turnava noted that the documentary series represents one of the first large-scale attempts to chronologically and systematically present the history of Georgian money based on reliable and documentary-confirmed sources.
“Money is not merely a means of payment it is a reflection of history. Every coin and banknote embodies the eras, political transformations, economic progress, and challenges that have shaped Georgia to this day,” stated Natia Turnava.
According to her, the project will make a significant contribution to the development of financial education and raising public awareness.
The Governor of the National Bank of Georgia also expressed gratitude to Caucasus International University, the project authors, and the creative team for producing the documentary films.
The media project was implemented within the framework of a science popularization grant competition and was fully financed by Caucasus International University. The project is led by Nino Chalaganidze, Adviser to the Chancellor of the University, while the author of the concept and head of the creative team is Sulkhan Meladze.
The event was attended by representatives of the Ministries of Culture, Education, Science and Youth, members of the Board of the National Bank of Georgia, the Executive Director and heads of departments. Attendees also included Zurab Gelenidze, General Director of Cartu Bank, Tinatin Berdzenishvili, General Director of the Georgian Public Broadcaster, representatives of academic circles, as well as the administration and faculty of Caucasus International University.
