Natia Turnava Participates in BIS Annual Meeting in Switzerland
Governor of the National Bank of Georgia, Natia Turnava, took part in the 95th Annual Meeting of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), held in Basel, Switzerland.
The meeting brought together governors of BIS member central banks, other central bank leaders, and high-level guests from around the world.
This year’s central theme focused on the experiences of emerging and transition economies in expanding cross-border payments.
The event emphasized the vital role the BIS plays in supporting the development of financial markets in emerging economies.
Participants had the opportunity to discuss challenges in payment systems and to identify areas of risk within financial systems. Industry leaders shared their experiences and the specific challenges they are facing.
The agenda also included discussions on banking security in the age of artificial intelligence.
According to Natia Turnava, the BIS Annual Meeting offers a valuable platform for central bank governors to share experiences and exchange best practices.
During the visit, Turnava also met with Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), to exchange perspectives on the current challenges facing the global financial system. She personally thanked Lagarde for the ECB’s continued support on behalf of the National Bank of Georgia.
Other attendees included Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England; Jerome Powell, Chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve; and Pan Gongsheng, Governor of the People’s Bank of China.
Founded in 1930, the Bank for International Settlements is headquartered in Basel, Switzerland. The BIS works exclusively with central banks and international financial institutions to promote global monetary and financial stability.
