Natia Turnava and Lasha Khutsishvili Meet with Pan Gongsheng, Governor of the People’s Bank of China
Natia Turnava, Governor of the National Bank of Georgia, and Lasha Khutsishvili, Minister of Finance, met with Pan Gongsheng, Governor of the People’s Bank of China.
The meeting took place in Thailand on the sidelines of the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group.
The parties discussed current issues in economic and financial cooperation between Georgia and China, ways to deepen cooperation between the two central banks, and opportunities for financial market development. Particular attention was given to the diversification of Georgia’s international reserves, progress in investments in China’s capital market, and the gradual increase in the share of the renminbi (RMB) in Georgia’s international reserves.
“We maintain regular contact with the People’s Bank of China and have very active cooperation, including joint projects. An important aspect of this cooperation is the continued diversification of our international reserves. The share of the renminbi in our reserves is gradually increasing, and the National Bank of Georgia is actively investing in renminbi-denominated assets in China’s capital market. We have therefore made solid progress, and our cooperation will deepen further in the future,” said Natia Turnava.
An important basis for strengthening cooperation between the National Bank of Georgia and the People’s Bank of China is the Memorandum of Understanding signed in March 2025. The document provides for cooperation in monetary policy, financial technology, payment systems, and securities market development, as well as the exchange of information and expertise.
One of the key priorities under the Memorandum is the development of cross-border payment infrastructure and the strengthening of financial ties between the two countries. This cooperation will help improve transaction efficiency and create new opportunities for Georgia’s financial sector.
