Natia Turnava and Lasha Khutsishvili Meet with IMF Representatives
In Washington, within the framework of the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, the Governor of the National Bank of Georgia (NBG), Natia Turnava, and the Minister of Finance of Georgia, Lasha Khutsishvili, held working meetings with Bo Li, Deputy Managing Director of the IMF; Jihad Azour, Director of the IMF’s Middle East and Central Asia Department; and Alejandro Hajdenberg, IMF Mission Chief for Georgia.
During the meetings, the parties discussed the solid and stable state of Georgia’s economy, characterized by low inflation and robust economic growth. It was noted that price stability in the country is a result of a consistent monetary policy.
Natia Turnava briefed IMF representatives on Georgia’s current macroeconomic trends and developments in the financial sector. She emphasized that despite global challenges and ongoing geopolitical uncertainties, Georgia’s economy continues to demonstrate resilience.
The discussions highlighted that due to the NBG’s consistent monetary policy, inflationary processes have been effectively managed. Following a period of high inflation, Georgia experienced inflation well below the target level over the past two years, and more recently it has stabilized close to the target.
Attention was also drawn to the sound indicators of the financial sector, strong economic growth, and the steady accumulation of international reserves. As the NBG Governor noted, the Bank’s long-term policy remains focused on building up international reserves and managing reserve assets efficiently.
The parties also discussed prospects for future cooperation in the area of technical assistance, as well as the upcoming IMF assessment missions to Georgia.
“Our intensive cooperation with the International Monetary Fund continues. Several technical assistance projects are currently underway, and we expect IMF assessment missions to visit Georgia in the near future,” stated Natia Turnava.
IMF representatives commended Georgia’s economic performance and reaffirmed their readiness to continue supporting the country across various areas.
The meetings were attended by Tamar Taliashvili, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the United States; NBG Vice Governors Ekaterine Mikabadze and Ekaterine Galdava; Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Vakhtang Tsintsadze; Deputy Minister of Finance Ekaterine Guntsadze; and Head of the NBG’s Macroeconomics and Statistics Department Tamta Sopromadze.
