In the four months of 2005 about 102,5 million US dollars were transferred from abroad to the Georgian commercial banks via various electronic settlement systems, exceeding the last year’s indicator by about 38 million. According to Vice-president David Amaglobeli, the volume of fast money transfers from abroad may reach the record indicator this year. The amounts transferred to Georgia during the last two years exceed 200 million US dollars each year, while these were 55 million before 2003.According to David Amaglobeli, the degree of confidence of the Georgian citizens living abroad has increased considerably in the recent period, raising the volume of money transfers from abroad via electronic payment systems. A great portion of these funds is invested in various assets including real estate and enterprise assets. Part of the funds is directed towards financing the consumer expenses, becoming one of the factors for facilitating import. Foreign capital inflows have some effect on the foreign exchange market. Large part of the funds is converted into lari and increase the demand for the national currency. Accordingly, the supply of the foreign currency is also increasing. According to Vice-president Amaglobeli, about 12% of the foreign exchange transfers entered through the official banking channels was remittances. As to money transfer structures, almost 55% of the funds entered through foreign channels from abroad in four months of 2005 were from the US and Russia. In 2000-2001 most funds came from the US, and since 2002 Russia has been on the top of the list. In the reporting period, 20.1 million US dollars have been transferred from Georgia abroad through the electronic settlement systems. Most funds are sent to Russia and Ukraine by the Georgian citizens. Monies are mostly transferred through Western Union as this system has the widest network not only in Georgia but worldwide. In the four months of 2005, 35.2 million US dollars were transferred to Georgia via Western Union through the banking channels, and 8.9 million US dollars were sent from Georgia.
