The decision to establish the World Savings Day was made in 1924 at the First International Savings Bank Congress in Milan, having representatives of 29 countries in attendance. Originally called World Thrift Day, its purpose was to promote the idea of keeping money in a bank instead of accumulating it at home. In 1989, the United Nations declared October 31 as World Savings Day. With the involvement of German savings banks and financial institutions, this day has been celebrated with various events in many countries for almost a hundred years now, helping raise awareness and encouraging savings.
