Initial Results of the NBG Survey on Foreign Investments Forecast for 2009
The National Bank of Georgia conducted the survey of local and foreign companies for the purpose of forecasting the balance of payments' particular details. The survey aimed at collecting information on potential inflows of private foreign capital into the country.
As of today, 119 companies have participated in the survey. According to preliminary data, a net inflow of 1.74 billion USD is expected to be attracted by the private sector in 2009. This figure exceeds the NBG's forecasts before the survey. In 2009, the breakdown of the highest capital inflows by country is the following: United Arab Emirates, USA, China, Great Britain, Czech Republic and Azerbaijan.
According to the survey's preliminary data, approximately 815 million USD is expected in the form of Foreign Direct Investments, while 33 million is expected in the form of portfolio investments in 2009. Regarding aggregate loans and other funds, another 1 billion USD is expected.
It should be noted that the survey reflects expectations and real inflows may differ from the forecast. It should be also mentioned, that the project concentration level is very high. Therefore, the whole level of investment inflows considerably depends on the success of individual high-scale projects.
Similar research is conducted by the majority of central banks in the world. The NBG has been conducted similar research since 2006 in a relatively small scale. The NBG plans to conduct such surveys semiannually.
The National Bank of Georgia would like to thank the companies that participated in the survey. Those companies, who have not yet participated in the NBG survey and plan to attract foreign capital in 2009 or would make payments are kindly asked to contact us (tel: 442 571) or complete the survey questionnaire available on NBG's web-site.
