08 November, 2005
According to the information of the Macroeconomics and Statistics Department of the National Bank of Georgia the international foreign currency reserves of the National Bank of Georgia will not be in danger due to the depreciation of Euro against USD. To protect from possible foreign exchange risk of Euro/USD pair the international foreign currency reserves of the National Bank of Georgia are allocated in both of these two currencies.
Such a decision is conditioned by some factors. Of them most important are diversification of foreign exchange risks and the growth of incomes from the reserve management. Moreover, the reserves denominated in Euro and USD would make it convenient to serve the country’s external debt. The international foreign currency reserves of Georgia are placed in top-rated financial instruments. For today, about 75 % of foreign currency reserves are allocated in USD and about 25 % - in Euro.
By November 7, 2005 the volume of the International foreign currency reserves amounted to USD 437.4 million.
