Current Tendencies of Deposit Growth
Non-bank deposits (current accounts and term deposits) in the country's banking sector constituted 2.8 billion GEL by November 1, 2008, which is 2.4 percent less than the comparable figure for the same period of the last year. It should be noted that during the same period the volume of term deposits grew by 8.4 percent and their share among all deposits amounted to 56.2 percent. It is noteworthy that during the past year the volume of deposits denominated in the national currency increased by 1.9 percent, while the volume of deposits decreased by 4.7 percent.
The dollarization coefficient of deposits decreased by 1.6 percentage points compared to the same period last year and amounted to 62.9 percent by November 1, 2008. An important factor in favor of this tendency was the fact that during the last year the interest rate for national currency denominated deposits was higher than for foreign currency denominated deposits. If the average interest rate for the mentioned period for all deposits was 9.3 percent, the interest rate for national currency denominated deposits was 11.0 percent and the interest rate for foreign currency denominated deposits was 8.7 percent.
The currency structure of the foreign currency denominated deposits changed significantly over the past year in favor of Euro. In particular, while a year ago the share of USD in the total volume of foreign currency denominated deposits equaled 83.3 percent and the share of Euro equaled 16.1 percent, by November 1 of the current year the share of USD decreased to 79.5 percent and the share of Euro increased to 19.9 percent.
It is noteworthy that despite the growth of the positive attitude of the population towards the national currency, the share of deposits denominated in foreign currency still remains high in the whole structure of the individual's deposits, having constituted 79.5 percent on November 1, 2008. Still, as compared to the same period of the last year, this indicator has decreased by 4.0%. During the last year the volume of individual's deposits decreased by 33.0 million lari (2.6 percent) and exceeded 1.2 billion lari, which amounts to about 280 lari per capita.
