Current Tendencies of Deposit Growth

31 December, 2008

Non-bank deposits (current accounts and term deposits) in the country's banking sector constituted 2.9 billion GEL by December 1, 2008, which is 1.3 percent more than the comparable figure for the beginning of the year. During this period the volume of foreign currency denominated term deposits grew by 8.6 percent, while the volume of national currency denominated term deposits decreased by 12.7 percent. Aforementioned is mainly due to the revaluation caused by the exchange rate change.

The dollarization coefficient of deposits increased by 4.7 percentage points compared to the beginning of the year and amounted to 70.3 percent by December 1, 2008. The currency structure of the foreign currency denominated deposits also changed. In particular, while in the beginning of the year the share of USD in the total volume of foreign currency denominated deposits equaled 80.5 percent and the share of Euro equaled 18.6 percent, by December 1, 2008 the share of USD decreased to 77.3 percent and the share of Euro increased to 22.2 percent.

It is noteworthy that despite the growth of the positive attitude of the population towards the national currency, the share of deposits denominated in foreign currency still remains high in the whole structure of the individuals' deposits, having constituted 84.8 percent on December 1, 2008. Since the beginning of the year the volume of individuals' deposits increased by 87.6 million GEL (6.8 percent) and reached 1.4 billion GEL, which amounts to about 314 GEl per capita. The increase of individuals' deposits is due to the increase in foreign currency denominated deposits (8.6 percent). In the same period the volume of the national currency denominated deposits of individuls decreased by 2.2 percent.
