Current condition of commercial banks’ loan portfolio

The volume of lending by commercial banks (including loans to non-residents) in September 2013 increased by 177.4 million GEL (1.9 percent) compared to the previous month, constituting 9.5 billion GEL by October 1, 2013. The volume of loans provided in the national currency increased by 114.5 million GEL (3.5 percent) and the volume of loans in foreign currencies increased by 62.9 million GEL (1.0 percent).

By the end of September 2013, commercial banks issued 917.0 million GEL worth of national currency-denominated loans (7.0 percent, or 60.3 million GEL, more than in the previous month) to resident legal entities and 4.0 billion GEL worth of loans in foreign currencies (1.3 percent, or 49.4 million GEL, more than the previous month).

Of the total volume of lending to legal entities, the biggest share falls on trade - 46.0 percent. Compared with the previous month, in September 2013 the volume of loans provided for trade increased by 1.5 percent, or 32.5 million GEL, and constituted 2.2 billion GEL.

The share of loans provided to the industrial sector constituted 19.0 percent of all loans to legal entities, amounting to 928.3 million GEL by October 1, 2013 (0.9 percent, or 8.0 million GEL, more than in September 1, 2013); 9.1 percent falls on construction, amounting to 442.8 million GEL (an increase of 0.2 percent, or 0.9 million GEL). Therefore, 74.1 percent of the total volume of lending to legal entities falls on only three sectors - industry, construction and trade.

The volume of lending to resident individuals increased by 1.7 percent, or 72.8 million GEL, during September 2013 and constituted 4.3 billion GEL by October 1, 2013.
