Blocking the Banking Transfers from Russia is Technically Difficult

19 May, 2005
Following the recent tension in the Russian-Georgian relations, the Russian State Duma made a statement on the suspension or termination of the banking transfers to Georgia. Despite the fact that the funds transferred to Georgia from Russia serve for the survival of the part of the Georgian population, such blockade from the side of Russia, in view of the modern banking communications, is difficult to implement from the technical point of view. Even if the technical issues are solved (if the Russian banks are prohibited to make transfers to Georgia) it will be possible to transfer money to Georgia in alternative ways. In reality, this ‘blockade’ from the Russian Federation will have negative impact on the income of Russian banks and accountability of transfers. Per Russian press, the volume of such remittances and transfers amounts to a billion USD a year. The transfers from Georgia to Russia are four times less than the incoming amount, the ‘Russian version’ of the volume of transfers is excessively exaggerated. The transfers from Russia amount to around one third of the total transfers registered within the banking system (as of 2004 the official banking transfers per annum amounted to 98 million 593 thousand USD).
