
Balance of Payments of Georgia (I Quarter 2023)
Balance of Payments statistic is compiled according to the methodology provided by the IMF's "Balance of Payments Manual, Fifth edition".
In the first quarter of 2023, the current account deficit totaled 201.4 million USD (531.0 million GEL). The trade of goods and income account make negative contribution to current account, while services account and current transfers - positive. In the first quarter of 2023 current account deficit decreased by 67.1 percent annually and current account deficit to GDP from -13.3 percent to -3.2 percent.
Balance of goods is the major contributor to the current account. Trade of goods deficit increased by 25.2 percent annually and amounted to 1.3 billion USD (3.4 billion GEL) in the first quarter. Among them exports increased by 24.2 percent and imports by 24.6 percent annually.
The travel export, that started recovering from the second quarter of 2021, reached 795.4 million USD (2.1 billion GEL) in the first quarter of 2023, up by 37.5 percent compared to the corresponding quarter of 2019.
Net income account totaled -332.6 million USD (-876.8 million GEL) in the first quarter of 2023. Compensation of employees, the positive component of income account increased by 50.2 percent and negative component, investment income, was up by 9.0 percent.
The current transfers balance is positive. Credit of current transfers increased by 37.0 percent annually totaling 781.5 million USD (2.1 billion GEL). The private sectors transfers was up by 36.6 percent to reach 728.0 million USD (1.9 billion GEL).
Net foreign direct investments amounted to 383.4 million USD (1.0 billion GEL) accounting for 6.1 percent of GDP.
