Archil Mestvirishvili: Protecting Consumer Rights is an Important Priority for us
The first international Consumer Rights Week was held in Georgia on March 15, as part of the International Consumer Rights Day. The event was organized by the National Bank of Georgia, the National Competition Agency, Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission (GNERC), the State Insurance Supervision Service, the Communications Commission and the National Food Agency.
Archil Mestvirishvili, Acting Governor and Vice Governor of the National Bank of Georgia, took part in the opening event. He spoke at length in his speech about the successive steps that the National Bank of Georgia has been taking in recent years to protect the rights of consumers in the financial sector. It is worth noting that the financial sector of Georgia marks consumer rights day with various events since 2021 at the discretion of the National Bank of Georgia.
"Protecting the rights of consumers in the financial sector of Georgia is an important priority for the National Bank of Georgia, as the regulator of the country's financial sector, and we have been actively working in this area since 2011. The country's central bank has implemented a number of important projects and activities to establish a transparent and competitive environment and reduce credit risks in the retail market. These included the development and improvement of the legislative framework and streamlining of customer relations. The regulation on the protection of consumer rights sets a high standard of transparency and information disclosure for financial institutions. This helps customers make well-informed decisions and supports an even more competitive environment in the financial sector. We receive customer inquiries, and react to them appropriately, trying to help them as much as possible within the scope of our competence and authority. The fact that an increasing number of customers tend to address us in the recent years indicates that the steps we have taken have a positive impact on the customer awareness. The Code of Ethics for the collection of loans implemented last year will help strengthen the image of the NBG as a reliable partner for financial institutions in the eye of a customer, and protect their rights and interests as much as possible. Also, it ensures the conduct of business relations based on the principles of honesty, transparency and justice on the part of financial institutions," Archil Mestvirishvili said in his speech.
