The National Bank of Georgia launches the sale of the collector coins of David the Builder and King Tamar

Continuing to develop numismatic activities and to promote the history of Georgia, the National Bank of Georgia is eager to proceed working the "Kings of Georgia” collector coin series. This time we are pleased to present 5 lari denomination gold and silver David the Builder and King Tamar collector coins.

 

Design sketches for David and Tamar coins were selected through the open competition and they were created by Nitta Gongadze.

 

David and Tamar coins were minted in Lithuanian Mint. Mintage for silver coins is 3000 pieces and for gold coins – 500 pieces. The price of silver coins is 110 GEL and of gold coins - 1500 GEL.

 

Taking into account the pandemic situation in the country, coins will be sold only through the online store of the Money Museum of the National Bank of Georgia and the coins will be sold according to the following schedule:

 

The sale of King David gold coins will begin on November 16, 2021 from 10:00 A.M.

The sale of King David silver coins will begin on November 22, 2021 from 10:00 A.M.

The sale of King Tamar gold coins will begin on December 3, 2021 from 10:00 A.M.

The sale of King Tamar silver coins will begin on December 8, 2021 from 10:00 A.M.

 

To make sure that the coins are available to more interested persons, they are sold in a limited manner - one user will be able to purchase no more than one gold and one silver coins.

 

The description of the coin design of David the Builder themed coin:

 

 

 

The main composition of the obverse is the bas-relief of David the Builder from the mural of Gelati Monastery (in the left hand David is holding a mock-up of Gelati Monastery, in the right - "paper roll" (Imperial Insignia). On the coin, the inscription "დავით აღმაშენებელი" and the years of his reign "1089 - 1125" are inscribed. The left part depicts an oak leaf with two fruits - the acorn as a symbol of church reform implemented by King David (on our silver coin, this detail is gold-plated).

 

The main composition of the coin reverse is the image of David the Builder's Crown (reconstruction according to the mural of Gelati Monastery) with the inscriptions "5 ლარი", "2021", "საქართველო", "GEORGIA".

Description of the coin design of King Tamar themed coin:

 

 

 

The main composition of the obverse is bas-relief of King Tamar from the mural in Betania Monastery. On the left side of the bas-relief signature of Tamar is depicted, when on the right side there is the inscription "თამარ მეფე", the period of his reign is "XII ს." and the symbol of Tamar, which the obverse of the coin issued by the name of the king was bearing (on our silver coin, this detail is gold-plated).

 

The main composition of the reverse is the image of King Tamar's Crown (reconstruction according to the mural of David Gareji complex, Bertubani Monastery). The inscriptions "5 ლარი", "2021", "საქართველო", "GEORGIA" are featured on the coin.

We have suspended the sale of David the Builder and King Tamar gold and silver collector coins of the Kings of Georgia series. The information on the time and form of coin sale will be available through the National Bank of Georgia social network at a later date.
