For the first time in Georgia the National Bank nominated the Georgian painter Nodar Malazonia the winner of the international competition announced for creation of money design. The second place won the Austrian company Oesterrichische Banknoten und Sicherheitsdruck GmbH and the third one took the German company Giesecke & Devrient. According to the terms and conditions of the competition, the winner-designer will get 3000 Lari, the second place - 1500 Lari, and the third one - 500 Lari.
Among the twelve designers participating in the competition there were 5 foreigners. Until now only the local painter-designers participated in Lari-design competitions. Up to the moment of opening the competitive package, twelve applications have been submitted to the National Bank, including seven applications from Georgia (including painter-designers Nodar Malazonia, Mamuka Gongadze, Giorgi Kutsrashvili, David Beitrishvili, Ilya Nakhutsrishvili, Shalva Lursmanashvili). As to the application from foreign countries, the following companies presented their own sketches for 200 Lari banknote design: the German company Giesecke & Devrient; National Bank of Belgium, Swedish company Crane AB, Swiss company Orell Fussli Security Printing Ltd and the Austrian company Oesterrichische Banknoten und Sicherheitsdruck GmbH.
“We are pleased to note that the largest European companies expressed their wish to create a design for the Georgian national currency banknote for the first time. Thus, we may call this competition international. On the other hand, 200 lari banknote must depict the view of Sukhumi, the dearest sight for the Georgian people. This means that a banknote with Sukhumi sight was designed not only by the Georgian companies but also by leading European ones“, said the President of the National Bank of Georgia Roman Gotsiridze.
The National Bank of Georgia invited Mints of Europe, Asia and America for participation in the competition. Among these companies are other famous companies, which create design of American dollar, euro, pound sterling and other currency banknotes.
The obverse of 200 lari banknote must depict the portrait of public figure Niko Nikoladze, and the view of Sukhumi on the reverse side.
