According to Article II of the "Law on the National Bank of Georgia", one of the major goals of the National Bank of Georgia (NBG) is to provide efficient and proper functioning of payment systems. The main purpose of a payment system is the fast and secure circulation of funds between consumers.

At this stage, the NBG is reforming the national payment system. The goal/purpose of this reform is to upgrade the current inter-bank RTG System and, also, introduce a new system of government securities.

On December 5, 2008, the Payment System National Committee was set up to support reforms regarding the payment system. The main goals of the committee are to:

  • Supervise the payment system reform process;
  • Promote cooperation and information exchange among system participants;
  • Ensure the reliable and effective functioning of the existing system.

The members of the Committee are representatives of leading commercial banks, the Georgian Banking Association, the Ministry of Finance, the Financial Supervisory Agency and the NBG.

The efficient functioning of Georgia's payment systems will contribute to the financial and economic stability of the country. The reforms in the current payment system will provide a reliable, well-organized, corresponding system in accordance with international standards, which will decrease operational risks and increase system stability and efficiency.
