Natia Turnava, Governor of the National Bank of Georgia, took part in a scientific conference held to celebrate Economist's Day, which this year marked the 30th anniversary of the Lari's introduction.

At the VII National Scientific Conference of Economists, titled "The Role of the National Currency in the Georgian Economy," Turnava congratulated attendees on their professional day. She emphasized that the economist profession is vital to the country's stability and development, and that economists’ contributions are fundamental to economic security and growth. She highlighted the growing public confidence in the Lari and recognized the economists involved in its original issuance.

"The impressive achievements of the Georgian economy in recent years demonstrate that our economists both scientists and practitioners are performing at the highest level. Despite numerous global challenges, the country’s economy continues to show sustainable indicators," said Turnava.

She also expressed her gratitude to distinguished economists and financiers whose work was instrumental in creating the Lari.

"I would like to especially acknowledge those who played an active role in the Lari’s creation and successfully brought the process to completion. Thanks to your invaluable contribution, Georgia today has a national currency  a symbol of our economic independence. It is fitting that this conference commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Lari’s introduction, a milestone accompanied by steadily growing confidence in the currency," Turnava added.

The conference also featured welcoming remarks from prominent figures, including Vladimer Papava, academician of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences; Vakhtang Tsintsadze, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development; Shota Berekashvili, Chairman of the Parliament’s Economic Policy Committee; Roin Metreveli, President of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences; and Nodar Javakhishvili, former Governor of the National Bank of Georgia.

During the event, leading economists and representatives from the NBG delivered reports on topics such as the growing role of Larization in financial stability, economic globalization, and Georgia’s future economic prospects.

Economist's Day has been celebrated in Georgia since 1999, traditionally on the second Friday of September, commemorating the 1918 publication of the first Georgian economic journal, The Georgian Economist.
