20 July, 2023

Natia Turnava, acting Governor of the National Bank of Georgia, met with Pawel Herczynski, the Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia at the NBG Headquarters. The partners discussed economic trends in the country, issues of financial stability and projects implemented within the framework of cooperation with the European Union. Natia Turnava spoke in detail about the successive steps taken by the NBG to enforce and monitor the international sanctions, noting that the financial institutions of Georgia operate in full compliance with the sanctions imposed on the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus.

The meeting underscored the importance of the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Union in the development of the capital market in Georgia. Natia Turnava highlighted Georgia's accession to the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) and the legislative changes that will approximate Georgia's legislation with the EU's legislation.

"Georgia is the first country in the region to declare willingness to join the SEPA. Membership of SEPA will bring us one step closer to the goal of membership of the European family. This is expected to boost the credibility of the financial sector of Georgia in the international arena and help simplify trade relations with the European Economic Area. The projects implemented with the support of the European Union improve and strengthen the NBG's supervisory tools, which in turn ensures the stability and transparency of the financial sector of Georgia", Natia Turnava said.
