Koba Gvenetadze delivered a speech at the international conference. He spoke in detail about the challenges the central banks faced during the post-pandemic period. Koba Gvenetadze discussed about the emergency measures the National Bank of Georgia has introduced in order to overcome the crisis caused by COVID-19. Launching the temporary instruments in order to keep the liquidity risks low was one of the important measures taken by the NBG. In response to the crisis, the National Bank of Georgia developed a temporary supervisory plan, which, among others, implied use of the capital buffers. The Governor stressed that alongside all the above-mentioned challenges, central banks need to be also cautious about the timely withdrawal of the implemented temporary measures. During his speech, the Governor underlined the importance of further development of banking technologies and digitalization of financial services in order to promote the improvement of the banking services. As the Governor noted, the NBG is actively involved in the process of launching of the numerous projects for this purpose, including Open Banking, Instant Payments and Digital Lari projects.
The Governors of the National Bank of Moldova, Romania, Belgium, Netherlands and Lithuania participate in the session together with the Governor of the National Bank of Georgia. The session was entirely focused on the role of central banks in post pandemic recovery. This international event gathered high level representatives of international organizations, central banks, local commercial banks, the business community, and the economic experts. the conference was a good opportunity for a dynamic exchange of views and experience on the role of central banks and the banking community in supporting the post-pandemic economy.
The National Bank of Georgia and the National Bank of Moldova have a long-term cooperation. Based on the Memorandum of Bilateral cooperation signed 10 years ago, the representatives of the National Bank of Moldova have the frequent consultations with the National Bank of Georgia.
