Balance of Payments of Georgia (II Quarter 2023)
Balance of Payments statistic is compiled according to the methodology provided by the IMF's "Balance of Payments Manual, Fifth edition".
In the second quarter of 2023, the current account deficit totaled 366.0 million USD (936.5 million GEL). The trade of goods and income account make negative contribution to current account, while services account and current transfers - positive. In the second quarter of 2023 current account deficit increased by 34.8 percent annually and current account deficit to GDP from -4.6 percent to -4.9 percent.
Balance of goods is the major contributor to the current account. Trade of goods deficit increased by 13.0 percent annually and amounted to 1.2 billion USD (3.2 billion GEL) in the second quarter. Among them exports increased by 15.3 percent and imports by 14.4 percent annually.
The travel export, that started recovering from the second quarter of 2021, reached 1.0 billion USD (2.6 billion GEL) in the second quarter of 2023, up by 15.0 percent compared to the corresponding quarter of 2019.
Net income account totaled -633.5 million USD (-1.6 billion GEL) in the second quarter of 2023. Compensation of employees, the positive component of income account decreased by 1.8 percent and negative component, investment income, was up by 36.7 percent.
The current transfers balance is positive. Credit of current transfers increased by 0.8 percent annually totaling 771.8 million USD (2.0 billion GEL). The private sectors transfers was up by 1.6 percent to reach 719.6 million USD (1.8 billion GEL).
Net foreign direct investments amounted to 472.6 million USD (1.2 billion GEL) accounting for 6.3 percent of GDP.
