07 September, 2026

As of August 2026, Georgia’s gross international reserves increased by 56.4 percent year-on-year, reaching an all-time high of USD 8.14 billion. Compared to the previous month, international reserves grew by USD 613 million. Reserve adequacy metrics have also improved. The current level of foreign exchange reserves exceeds the 100% adequacy threshold set by the International Monetary Fund methodology (ARA metric), standing at 128.2%.

International reserves are a crucial guarantor of the country's macroeconomic stability. Accordingly, the long-term policy of the National Bank of Georgia (NBG) is consistently focused on reserve accumulation and the effective management of reserve assets. Whenever the foreign exchange market and macroeconomic conditions permit, the Central Bank replenishes its foreign exchange reserves. As a result of the NBG’s policy, reserve volume has doubled over the past two years compared to October 2024. Driven by favorable FX market conditions throughout 2026, the NBG has actively accumulated reserves, with total net purchases reaching USD 2,566.6 million between January and July 2026. Meanwhile, net purchase statistics for August 2026 will be published on September 25.

Notably, in 2024, the NBG made a strategic decision to diversify its reserves and made its initial investment in gold. Since then, the price of gold has increased significantly, further contributing to the growth of international reserves. In June 2026, the NBG purchased an additional USD 100 million worth of monetary gold for its gross international reserves. As of August 2026, driven by gold price fluctuations, the value of monetary gold increased by USD 135 million month-on-month, reaching USD 1,149.2 million. Monetary gold currently accounts for 14.1% of total gross international reserves.

The National Bank of Georgia will publish updated data on gross international reserves on October 7, 2026.
