The Current Account Balance for the Third Quarter is Positive – NBG Publishes the Balance of Payments Report

Balance of Payments statistic is compiled according to the methodology provided by the IMF's "Balance of Payments Manual, Fifth edition".


In the third quarter of 2024, the current account surplus totaled 61.4 million USD (166.6 million GEL). The trade of goods and income account make negative contribution to current account, while services account and current transfers - positive. In the third quarter of 2024 current account balance improved by 75.1 million USD annually and current account to GDP from -0.2 percent to 0.7 percent.


Balance of goods is the major contributor to the current account. Trade of goods deficit decreased by 6.9 percent annually and amounted to 1.5 billion USD (4.1 billion GEL) in the third quarter. Among them exports increased by 23.0 percent and imports - by 9.9 percent annually.


The travel export reached 1.6 billion USD (4.2 billion GEL) in the third quarter of 2024, up by 8.0 percent annually.


Net income account totaled -636.0 million USD (-1.7 billion GEL) in the third quarter of 2024. Compensation of employees, the positive component of income account decreased by 42.2 percent, and negative component, investment income increased by 0.4 percent.

 

The current transfers balance is positive. Credit of current transfers decreased by 13.4 percent annually totaling 845.6 million USD (2.3 billion GEL). The private sectors transfers was down by 13.8 percent to reach 794.2 million USD (2.2 billion GEL).


Net foreign direct investments amounted to 80.4 million USD (218.1 million GEL) accounting for 0.9 percent of GDP.
